Insects are the most diverse group of animals on the planet, accounting for 60 percent of all multicellular organisms. They are one of the first animal groups to shift from aquatic (water-based) life and adapt to terrestrial (land-based) life. Insects also play an important role in maintaining a healthy environment by improving soil, pollinating plants, controlling pests, and as a food source for other animals.
